SMSTS Refresher Changes

Posted on Oct 10, 2015

From 1st January 2016, CITB Construction Skills are removing the grace period for the Site Safety Plus scheme.

The Site Safety Plus Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) provides delegates with the essential health and safety knowledge necessary for working in construction, as well as keeping them informed about relevant legislature and environmental issues.

The SMSTS qualification remains valid for 5 years, at which point a Refresher course is needed to ensure that workers are aware of any recent developments in these areas.

The system currently in place allows SMSTS certificate holders needing to renew their qualification a six month grace period following the expiry date in which to take the SMSTS Refresher course. The new rules will mean that the Refresher course must be completed before the current certificate expires.

The current process will continue until the end of this year, meaning that anybody with a certificate expiry date up to and including 31st December 2015 will still be entitled to the six month grace period. Certificate holders with an expiry date from 1st January 2015 will need to attend a Refresher course prior to the end date of their certificate. Failure to do so will risk their right to attend a Refresher course, and they will be required to attend the full 5 day SMSTS course again.

Construction Skills People run both the full SMSTS course and the SMSTS Refresher course.

If the grace period changes affect you, book onto one of our Refresher courses now.
